What a beautiful article about Russell Flammia. I always thought he was the nicest boy at school. He always had a smile and a nice hello when we passed in the hall. I should have known that he would go on to live such a fulfilling and exemplary life.

All the rest of us need to know who Russell's press agent is.  What a great article and front page, full color too.

Hi!  It's me! After many long months, I finally obtained access to the TJ Website again!  The Internet has cursed me over the years by forcing me to change ALL my Passwords for my email, my Facebook, my TJ Website, and even the Arizona State University Online page, every single time I visit Joel in Phoenix or go on a trip out-of-town!   I think I have had about 10 different Passwords during 2016, but Mike Floyd finally helped out! Thanks,Mike!  I feel like I am "home again!"

I just read about Russell's Article in Mike's Forum comment andn rushed to find it and to read it!!!  Great story, Russell !  I am SO happy that you are obtaining recognition for all your hard work!   I am very far away from lots of people in my class, but it is exciting to read all the stories about my classmates' families and activities, and when something BIG happens like a newspaper article about one of our classmates, I am SO PROUD!!!  Way to go, Russell !!!  We appreciate all that you do!!!

We are now in Florida for 2 weeks, if anyone wants to get in touch with us!   We usually come here every January to visit old friends who live here, old friends who visit here during the Winter like we do, and Joel's cousin, the professional Artist who paints phenomenal canvases and has had huge exhibits on the West Coast of Florida, but this year, there is even more excitement:

Joel Retired from his last Partnership as a C.P. A. last December, and the folks in his office had heard him talking a lot about how he wanted to see the new Panama Canal.  Quite by surprise, they gave him a check to cover the cost of a Cruise to that very location, by way of the Bahamas, Colombia, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Cabo San Lucas, all the way to San Diego.  We will be in Florida for the next 2 weeks and on the Cruise Ship from mid-January to the end of the month!  He is very excited about this!  This and Alaska (which we cruised 3 years ago) were on his "Bucket List," as he calls it!  The fact that we don't have to pay for anything but Souvenirs we buy is exciting too!  He is still working with clients that he did not sell to his former Partners, so we can live on something besides Social Security, but this is a nice break from "The Real World."  This year has been a "humdinger!"  I will try to send photos of interesting places we visit during the Cruise!

My daughters are both happily married now and my Granddaughter is preparing for College in 1 1/2 years.  She is a beautiful and bright young lady with a lot of energy and enthusiasm, and with her grades and school activities, she will have no trouble being accepted at any College or University she chooses.  She wants to study somewhere in California, but she has not made her selection yet.  I imagine she will send out many applications during the next calendar year!!!  She is still Cheerleading for Football and Basketball teams at her High School, and she is a fantastic dancer !!!   Linda Salsbury, you should see her do the Salsa!!!  The students in that number were dressed in gorgeous red dresses at the December Dance Program, and she looked like a Professional Dancer on Stage!!!  Wow!!!

What else is new?  Well, I finished my course on "Art of Asia" with the grade of A !  (Shocker!)  My Professor was a woman from Japan, who invited me to the Phoenix Museum of Art to see the unrolling of the Chinese Scrolls.  It was so exciting, Joel and I bought an Art Museum Membership, and we have been back to see exhibits on Fashion, Art from India, and last week, a series by Kehinde Wiley, an Afro-American Artist who has taken the Art World by storm, coast to coast!  He paints giant canvases that cover the wall from floor to ceiling!  The characters are Afro-American; the costumes or uniforms are European.  The best ones were of Michael Jackson and also his portraits of women.  It was a stunning collection of about 50-100 paintings which took up the entire first floor gallery of the Phoenix Art Museum!

I also attended a conference of the Arizona Art Educators and made some excellent contacts in Phoenix. Most of those programs were not in existence when I lived there from l989-99; they are rather new. There were Speakers, Workshops, and a Networking Luncheon.

Moving along, after my first course at Arizona State University Online, I took the 2nd required course, which was "Art of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas."  The latter refers to Mexico and South America, and the history was rather gory! - Child Sacrifice, Enemy Sacrifice, etc.  The headhunters of New Guinea were next.  The best part of the course was learning about Africa and Hawaii.  They are light years ahead of the Americas in preserving their culture globally and without malice.  I found that to be very comforting!!!

In the Fall, I took "Art of the Comic,"  and I was ecstatic to elarn that the "Superhero" comics like "Batman," "Superman," "Wonder Woman," and even "Captain America" were ALL drawn by Jewish men who changed their last names!!!  (I have been wondering ever since if my Mom knew this when she threw away or gave away my comic book collection!)   So I spent a lot of time this past year tracking down comic books like "Little Nemo" and "Classics Illustrated," "Tweety & Sylvester," and "Disney Comics."   My professor for this class was a Retired Navy Officer who had posted Comics on the wall over her desk while she was in the Service!  She went back to college after serving in Japan, and earned her Ph.D. in Art History and there were over l65 students enrolled in her class this past fall, about the same number as those in "Art in Asia."  It was a fascinating class!

I was Registered for a course called "Renaissance Portraits" for January, but Joel so much wanted the Panama Cruise, I had to drop it, and will search for it again next year. In late February, I will take "Art of the Television."  That should be interesting, because "The Old TV Shows" we grew up with were l00 times better than what is offered today!   I love to watch the re-runs, and I think the scriptwriters then were very clever!!!  I wish we had as much talent in that industry now as we had then!!!

Nothing else to add besides,"Happy New Year!"  I am glad 2016 is over and I am hoping that 2017 will be a good challenge for all of us in pursuing whatever we choose to make us happy!  Politics aside, we are in our prime, and we have the energy to be as active as we can possibly manage to be!!!   Take care, all !   I am really looking forward to the 2017 Tee Jay Reunion!!!

PS - Virginia Southworth, where do you live?

Nancy Wallerstein, will we get to see you this year?

Linda Salisbury, are you anywhere nearby?

We are in Florida for 2 weeks and will be on both the East Coast and the West Coast!

PPS - I LOVE looking at the photos everyone has taken!!!

Mike, we have been to Key West and we just loved it, even though we were only there for two days and

                 one night!  It is awesome!

Melvin Katz, I loved your photos of Africa!   Some friends of my daughter in Yuma went there this past

Fall, and they also sent back photos on Facebook of all the animals they saw!   I guess that is

on MY "Bucket List," but I don't know if I will EVER get there, so I will just "fantasize" through your

photos and theirs!  (Did you actually SEE Victoria Falls?   I heard that is "mind - boggling!!!")

Oh!  I forgot!  Something else to celebrate!   My oldest  sister, Joyce (Wolfe) Hoffer (TJ Grad, l958) has 3 sons.  The youngest of those 3 and his wife just brought into the world the first GRANDSON for her family, and the ONLY little boy among the 6 Grandchildren of my Sister and I !  I have 2 girls, and one Granddaughter; she has 3 sons and 4 Granddaughters.  The Wolf family name (without the -e) for the next generation will be carried on by the two sons of my cousin, Franklin Wolf, whom you saw in the Wedding Photos. Both of his sons now live in or near San Francisco, California now, but their Sister has been stationed in San Diego as well as Norfolk and Rhode Ialand as an Officer in the U. S. Navy, and will be heading toward the Middle East this month on her next assignment!  There is so much going on in our family, it is hard to keep track of it all !!!

Mary Nelson Payne (Reynolds)

I noted the obit for the well-known golfer Jane Mack.  I remember her from Hill School and followed her much appreciated fame for years in the sports section.  I mourn the loss of Jane and cherish her memory from those long-ago days of our youth.

Oh, how sad!!!   I went to Westhampton School with Jane Mack, and I had no idea she played golf!!!

I have photos of her from Elementary School at Westhampton and did not know she went to Albert Hill School !!

I tried to find her on Facebook in the past and did not succeed!

Thank you for that message!!!

Gwynn McNaught (Henderson)

Thank you, Mary Nelson, for letting us know about Jane Mack.  I remember her very well and knew she was an outstanding golfer but didn't know she was also an artist.  How sad (and sobering) that she died unexpectedly at only 72!  She was such a nice person.  I know she will be missed by many.

Russell Flammia

Hi folks, I'm sorry about being a little late responding to the class as a whole, but guess why---I've been busy at Tee Jay tutoring students and working with the Tee Jay Vikings Fund on our whiteboards project for the classrooms. I just wanted to thank everyone for the very kind and heart felt messages that I have received since the 'Making a difference' article came out in the Times Dispatch.Your words have touched my heart many times. I am truly blessed to have such wonderful classmates, friends and fellow alumni. Although I obviously knew the article was going to be printed, I had no idea it would be on the front page. I was truly shocked.  We were in Calif. when the article was printed and one of my former students, whom I taught in 1966-67, called to congradulate me. When I told him where we were, he said 'Well coach it was a good article, so it's o.k. to come back home.'  So I'm back home and once again my feet are on the ground. It's difficult to find just the right words that express my gratitude, but again thank you all so much.

Mary Lee Hudson (Meacham)

Jo Ann, Thank you for sharing with all of us what you have been doing. Unfortunately, we will miss this luncheon due to a prior committment. Someone else will have to take some pictures so Roger and I can feel like we are there with all of you. These luncheons have been a great way to reconnect with everyone, Looking forward to seeing you at the reunion if not another luncheon in the spring. We have a great class and when we get together its like we have never been apart. Enjoy the luncheon on the 21st. What you are doing is very special. When I was taking classes at Immaculata, I worked at Camilla Hall Nursing Home at night and also at Chester County Hospital in Labor and Delivery on the weekends 7-3. Besides my teaching degree, I have a nursing degree which I got between having 5 kids. I was an only child. We have one girl and 4 boys and 6 grandsons, and 6 granddaughters. We have a great time when we are all together. I wished my parents could of lived to see them, but I feel they can from above. Mary Lee

Because you can't link to a specific Letter to the Editor I have copied and pasted Melvin Katz's Letter to the Editor of January 6, 2017, below:

Russell Flammia

is a true friend

Editor, Times-Dispatch: Because I am a close friend of Russell Flammia, I felt compelled to comment on my friend and your recognition of him. I have known and called Flammia a friend from our early days at John B. Cary School in Richmond. We have known each other more than 65 years. Your tribute to him and the comments made by those you included in the news article are right on target.

Before Russell and his wife Jackie left for a trip to California on a flight this past Christmas Day, I called him. During the conversation, he related to me that his life had been replete with many friends. He stated that he felt a very close relationship with Sidney (quoted in your article), Bill Stanley and myself, Melvin Katz. We certainly feel the same way.

What was not shared in the article was the fact that because of Flammia, a group of Thomas Jefferson High School graduates, along with others who attended George Wythe, meet on frequent occasions at Padow’s for dinner. We have all been friends for the most part since those high school days and some (as is the case with myself) go back to elementary school. We meet to keep our friendships close and dear. Others outside our group find this bond of friends amazing. Because of Flammia, we all find it the natural thing to do to keep us together. These gatherings have people coming from as far away as Urbanna, Fredericksburg and other not-so-near locations. We do so because of our organizer, Russell.

Thank you again for recognizing in Russell Flammia what we have known for so long. He is a true friend of many and a credit to his alma mater.

Melvin J. Katz.

Manakin-Sabot.

Michael:

Thank you for taking the time to type and post the letter to the Editor that I wrote regards our mutual great friend Russell. One can not go through life and not have as close a relationship as we have been privileged to have with our classmates. Having a friend in Russell is one of the highest accolades one can have in life and we have been privey to this close bond during our lifetime. Russell is truly the definition of what a friend should be.

As Russell always signs off in his letters, G-D Bless

Hi folks,

I just wanted to say thank you for your time and efforts helping the Tee Jay Vikings Fund install the whiteboards at Tee Jay today.   We installed and distributed 21 whiteboards in 15 different rooms on the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st floors, unwrapped over 24 new boards, stacked them in 106, moved 25 plus boards from room 101 to 106, moved copious amounts of cardboard to the dumpster, stacked an even greater amount in 106, and moved numerous pieces of school furniture to 106.  In short, we accomplished quite a bit. Look at what a wonderful turnout we had and how much we accomplished.  We should be able to complete the total project with our next effort.

Thank you for helping us help Tee Jay,

                                                                            Russell Flammia

p.s. There were a couple of email

addresses that I could read so, please

forward if you notice a name left off.

Hi Everyone,

Just touching base. It's been busy here since September with grandkids, helping in school library, and helping kids with reading. I guess the teaching and helping kids never leaves you even after retirement. Russell you know because you are still giving. I am so proud to be a part of our class because we are still keeping in touch and looking forward to seeing all in September and probably before at a spring luncheon. We are going to Rhode Island in March to visit with our two grandkids boys while their parents go to Marco Island. It will be busy running them to basketball practices and games. Hope everyone is happy and healthy. Mary Lee (Hudson) Meacham

Dear Friends,

Many thanks for the very kind birthday wishes - your emails, cards and phone messages have been greatly appreciated and enjoyed!  You all made me feel like "Queen for the Day" (remember that really old TV show our Mother's watched).  I feel so blessed to have been a part of this wonderful class.  It has been said many times how special our close relationships are after so many years - the genuine caring about each other like a family - it is so true.

I sincerely hope that each of you and your families are well.  I look forward to seeing you in September at the reunion if not before.

Again, thank you for making my birthday so nice, hugs, Suesmiley
