Hi Mike, Just a note to let you know that we won be down on November 12th for the luncheon. opWe have family coming in and I have to sing in the choir on Sunday. Hopefully we'll see you again soon, but get some pictures of the luncheon. Four of our kids are running in the Philadelphia Marathon in November. November looks to be a busy month. Hope all is good with your family. We will check on the website to see our things are going. It's so great to keep up to date with everyone. Our Ocracoke family is finally getting back to normal. Mary Lee and Roger

Mary Lee:

We will not be at the luncheon. We have a meeting with our homeowners association in Nags Head. Sorry we will miss you.

Mike, I think someone at last luncheon or before mentioned that date, but nothing was decided. Guess everyone enjoys our time together. We knew we wouldn't be down that time.. I'm glad we won't be missing any luncheon. Roger and I love the Halloween picture of you and Heneretta. It's great! Three of our kids are running in the Philadelphia Marathon on 11/18. This will be the 40th one for our son, Patrick who ran many Boston's but not thank God when the bombing was. He said not more. He is 43 now, and lives in Rhode Island with his wife, Sue and two boys who are very active in sports and running. Hope all well with you two. Mary Lee & Roger

Mary Lee, It sounds like you have a family full or runners.  I can't imagine running 26 miles even once, but 40 times has to be a record.  Our son-in-law is an ironman.  He has competed in 3 Ironman races.  He also is in his 40’s and has said we won’t be doing any more ironman races.  He and our daughter think nothing of riding a bike for 100 miles on a Saturday.  They’re hiking Machu Picchu in 2 weeks to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary.

Hope to see you in Roger when you are in the area.

Hi Mike, Roger and I are the walkers in races and we leave the running to the kids. They love it and they definitely keep active. We are proud of all including the grandkids. Who would of thought me as an only child would have five kids and 12 grandkids. Will let you know when we'll be in town again. Mary Lee

Mike, Thanks for the pictures of the September Luncheon. We need to get them in a album sometime. It's fun to look at the different ones over this past year. We all enjoy our times together. I guess that's we don't mind traveling the disstance to see one another.  Mary Lee It seems we have a lot of fun when we get together. I hope in the spring we can encourage more people to join us.

Jo-Ann Olkowski

Hello, classmates.  I come on our class site so little and post even less; but I hope everyone has had a very good holiday and wish everyone a very happy new year in 2017.  There were so very few of you who knew me in our high school days ... but I knew most of you in one way or another from my little "hiding place" in the shadows.  I think perhaps in those days I didn't think my existence mattered that much, but life goes on.

I'll try to update you a little on my existence ... yeah, I'm still around!  As some of you may know, I started doing in-home healthcare work after moving to Tennessee.  After almost 2 years of taking care of a beautiful little lady on a 48 hour work week (and sometimes more hours) she passed on in January of this year - just 4 months shy of her 102nd birthday.  I think I just "crashed and burned" mentally, physically and emotionally with her passing.  I thought a one month leave of absence would be enough ... unfortunately it has been almost a year and I think I'm finally getting myself back together again, working way fewer hours.  Of course, there were other trials and tribulations going on all year as well, but here at year's end things seem to be settling down.

I think the horrific wildfire disaster we had at Gatlinburg put things in very clear focus as to what really matters in life - I'm in great shape healthwise compared to a lot of people my age, I have three beautiful children who love me, I have a roof over my head, great neighbors and friends ... in the long run I have much for which to be thankful.

Gatlinburg is on the mend thanks to the volunteer spirit so prevalent out here that is part of the fabric of people here.  Dolly Parton, who has never forgotten her Smoky Mountain roots, had a concert that raised over $9 million for the poorest in her home county - $1,000 per family for 6 months to help them get back on their feet. Dollywood itself was not harmed at all (and for those who so love our American Eagles - her crew went into immediate action to move all the eagles and other large birds of prey in the sanctuary to a better air quality location).  We still don't know the final charges that will be brought against the two juveniles who started the fire.

That's about it for me.  I haven't been back to Richmond in a couple of years due to work hours, but I'm planning a trip back in mid January.  If I don't see anyone else, the Padow's can probably expect me at the Willow Lawn store ... I hope the Willow Lawn store is still there!  I absolutely need a good hot pastrami with Swiss on rye!!!

Brenda Jenkins (Armstrong)

Dear JoAnn, from my daughters career as a home health nurse, I understand your work schedule and patient attachment.
We love the Smokies, particularly Gatlinburg and have spent many vacations there enjoying its beauty and trails AND shopping. I pray God's blessings for you in the coming new year. We don't get to Richmond often to socialize, mostly time with Jon's mom who is 95 and with us at this time. We do plan to make the reunion. CETake care of yourself and enjoy your family. My best wishes. And thanks for your honesty on life😊 Brenda

Lucy Boettcher (York)

Jo Ann,

It was great to read your message.  It has been a long time since we have seen each other.  If you get to come to Richmond in January, please call me.  I would like to get together. Padow's has moved to the far west end. My address is 8343 Quailfield Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23116.  (804) 730-1248.

This has been a sad year for me.  Mother, Hilda Boettcher, passed away in May. Before she got sick six years ago she always remembered you and your mother living next door.

Give me a call.  Leave a message with your number if I am out.  Would very much like to hear from you.

Lucy Boettcher York

Thank you Jo-Ann for so beautifully putting into words what most of us are finding important these days -- good health, loving children (and grandchildren if we're lucky), solid friendships, memories that make us smile.  AND hot pastrami sandwiches from Padow's!  I hope you'll make it to our reunion next September.  Though we didn't know each other all those years ago, it's not too late:-). Take care.

I'd love to see the article about Russell. Perhaps our wizard (Mike) can arrange a link?  I'm technically challenged and need all the help I can get.😊

Sally Kincannon,  If you come to Florida this year, please call me.  717-309-1743.  We'll be there through March.

Hi Folks,

We have been out of town celebrating Christmas with our family in Highlands, NC. We got home late last night after a 10 hour drive and thus was late lighting the 4th candle on the website Hanukkah Menorah.  Thanks to Virginia, Judy and Sherry I was able to find the well deserved newspaper article about Russell and post a link to it under announcesment on the Website.  But if you missed the announcement click on this link.

Living in Urbanna I don't often see the Times-Dispatch so when you see something we should share please let me know.  Thanks everyone for keeping me up-to-date.

What a fantastic article about Russell. Thanks Mike for letting us know about the article. These past few years we have gotten together since our reunion for luncheons has definitely shown all of us what a caring, fantastic class we are. My husband, Roger feels like he is a part of our class even though he is a 61 graduate of Highland Springs. Billy Collins told him at one luncheon they have made him a honorary member. The unique thing about our class is one time I was looking for a cardiologist for a friend in Richmond and Melvin Katz, as well as several others came through with names which really helped our friend. We look forward to other luncheons in the spring and getting ready for our 55th Reunion. Also, JoAnn thank you so much for the inspirational thoughts you wrote. Happy New Year 2017 everyone. Mary Lee PS Enjoyed seeing the pictures again of Albert H. Hill. If anyone can make me a copy, I will pay for it. I can't find mine with all our moves.

Dear Russell,  I want to add my kudos to all of those above!  It's gratifying to see recognition paid to one who has performed his job with devotion and dedication.  And continues to do so!  Your sense of purpose has obviously shed a bright light for all of us.  As my youngest grandchild would say:  "Good job!"

Russell,

This is to you but also to all of our classmates. The article in the Times Dispatch was great and an indication of your commitment to our alma mater and its students. Some may not know that in teaching about World War II to your students you interviewed my dad who was a B-24 bomber pilot who flew on D-Day. You also arranged for him to talk to some groups. He really enjoyed that. Then you and Billy Stanley came to my dad's funeral in Richmond in June, 2015, and I greatly appreciated that gesture. You are a truly great guy.

Sincerely,

Neely Young

To all of our classmates, I would be remiss if I did not send out to all, my thoughts on my Dear Friend Russell Flammia. He and I have been friends since our early Elementary grade school, John B. Cary. To have the friendships as long as we have had with each other is in some ways very extrodinary. To have the friendship of Russell Flammia for as long as I have is incredible.

The article in the Times Dispatch was certainly lauditory. What it did not capture however was Russell's  leadersip, the love and the wonerdul friendship that we as a group of graduated classmates have known for years. That Russell Flammia is an amazing individual who has walked this planet with digfnity, grace and affection for his fellow man. WE have been blessed to have Russell so close to all of us.

I actually spoke to Russell before he and Jackie left on their annual trip to California to visit with their son and his family. This was before the article in the Richmond Times Dispatch came out and true to who he is, not a word was spoken about was to come out in print. What did come out was the Blessings we have had in our respective lives and for the very dear friendships we both have.

In closing let me state again that all of our lives have been enriched because Russell Flammia has lived and been a part of our lives.

With friendship and affection

Melvin Katz
